Style and image is such a subjective topic, so as part of our research for Annah Stretton’s latest book Flourish we sought out the views of a small but diverse group of stylish women that are united by their unique sense of style, confidence and generosity of spirit. These women love what they do and are doing it with style.
First up, we’ve put some questions to one of our in-house experts – Angela Gilmour – about what she believes are the secrets to success when it comes to making the most of what nature has given each of us!
Q: Is it important for women to develop a signature look?
In a word, yes. I like to think of it in the same way that I go about creating a great home environment; it needs to work at a functional level but also have that ‘feel good to be in’ factor.’
Having worked in the rag trade her entire life, Angela is well used to seeing women use clothing to hide rather than enhance their body shape. ‘Once they are shown the basics around matching their body shape to the right clothing styles, size and colour palettes it’s like watching an epiphany take place. A different woman walks out of the shop!’
Equally popular however is the disdain with which many regard their various body parts. No matter whether it’s arms, legs, or tummies, Angela’s response is always the same “Who’s judging you? They’re doing a good job for you aren’t they? Accept them, love them and enjoy what you have right now!’
Q: When it comes to image and personal grooming, what are the most important areas to focus on?
Good Health – ‘when we are glowing with healthiness it shows in our skin and our hair and we look good in anything. Investing in a great haircut is another must!’
Underwear –‘good quality, good fitting underwear is the foundation to a great looking outfit. Take the time to invest in getting this layer right.’
Body shape – understanding what styles look great on your body shape will revolutionise your shopping expeditions. No more items hanging in the wardrobe that will never see the light of day.
One great Jacket per season – if you invest in the right shape and right fabric i.e. one that doesn’t pill – you can get many seasons wear out of one great purchase.
Q: What are the do’s and don’ts on expert accessorising?
‘Less is definitely more – tone it down, keep it simple but don’t be afraid to mix it up. Matchy, matchy always feels so contrived, so mix and match and have some fun.’
Q: What are your tips for workplace attire?
‘Dress to impress but always be believable. You want to be taken seriously in the workplace so ensure that your dress choice reflects that.’
Q: What’s your #1 style tip
‘Whatever you wear, wear it with confidence!’
